Unity or Yet Another Hypocrisy?

“Call for unity and healing”, that’s how mainstream media characterized Joe Biden’s speech at the Capitol. Moments after taking the oath we all had a chance to listen to ordinary rhetoric about very unordinary times and events. I will say, the tone of the speech was uplifting and encouraging, but I cannot stop to think that many of those words were nothing but empty claims and general terms aimed to fool the masses watching.
Do you not believe me? Watch the first press conference that took place couple hours later and tell me if you heard any concrete answers from the new press secretary Jen Psaki. We all know that one student who worked with you on a group project, hasn’t done any part of the presentation and then had to present in front of the class. That’s exactly what it reminded me of. Vague language that doesn’t provide any answers to many direct questions. Exact continuation of what we have seen from Joe Biden throughout his campaign. But should we be surprised considering Mrs. Psaki’s CNN history? Softball after softball, and when the fast ball comes you dodge and never answer.
I know, you are telling me it’s early days, but I would like to point out that this is nothing new. What I’m trying to say here is that one of Washington’s biggest problems is the infection of hypocrisy that’s riddled through every hallway, every office and every man and woman that sits in those chambers and cast their votes. Our new President is no different. He talks about uniting the country and representing all yet immediately after taking the office he signs 17 executive orders, most aimed at undoing everything his predecessor has done. Is that being a President for those 74 million people that voted for those policies like he said he will be? Is that allowing the elected Congress to discuss and introduce the law like he said he will do? Is that being any different to the previous 4 years like he said he will be? One hypocrite next to another on both sides of the aisle and it honestly makes me sad how many people they can still fool.
My friend Joe Hayes and I had plenty of conversations about these topics before, but I have refrained from picking up the pen and just offered advice. However, recently I saw a Facebook post by one of my college professors who has always voiced a very strong stance against President Trump. I was expecting yet another paragraph about how Joe Biden will save this country and how the racist Trump is finally gone. I was pleasantly surprised that my expectations were far from the truth. He has immediately called out Joe Biden on contradicting everything he has said in his speech literally a few hours later by signing those executive orders. This is exactly what we need, coming together with objective discussion. This experience was the final drop, I had to pick up my pen and share my thoughts.
What I’m calling for is simple, objectivity. If you support progressive liberal ideas then your choice in November was clear. If you fight against higher taxes, uncontrolled immigration and socialism, your choice was also clear. But if you are in the middle like me and share some ideas from both sides don’t fall victim to those empty words. Don’t fall victim to the biased mainstream media who all claim to portray the truth when in reality it’s only “their own truth” whether they are on the left or right.
We have plenty of other topics to touch on and we will in due time. For now, I ask you to read my pieces with an open mind. Try to be objective, discuss the current issues with your peers and even call me out if you think I’m being biased. We need objective discussion. It’s the only way to reach across and include everyone.
Your new friend,
Uncle Drew
