COVID Mandates

I partially started this blog because I despise discussing politics on social media - it's a road that leads to no where good as most people just get worked up and crazy. However, sometimes I cannot help myself. The new mayor of Boston - Michelle Wu - announced she would be implementing vaccine passports in the city, and it just hit too close to home for me. For context I said the following in response to her tweet:
Absolutely incredible that Boston went from being the birthplace of the American Revolution to "papers please." Freedom isn't a piece of paper - Bostonians once chucked nearly 100k pounds of tea into the Harbor to prove that point. So much for "15 days to slow the spread."

I got "unfollowed" relatively quickly by some. I find it sad that "politics" can drive such division between people. Oh well, they are always welcome to rejoin the conversation. Regardless, I received one very important question - how would you respond to a public health crisis? Hindsight is always 20-20, it's easy for me to sit from the comfort of my arm chair and pass judgement now, but a couple things must be acknowledged. What we have done in the past, and what we are doing now is not working. Do I have the answers? I don't know, I can make my case and you can be the judge, but we must acknowledge the basic premise I just spelled out, which is worth stating again - what we have done, and are doing now is not working. Someone once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” I agree with them.
Most people want to be left alone and liked by the majority. I wrote a comprehensive piece on the topic of groupthink I'll link to this piece, but its worth noting that most of the stuff you see on social media is people doing fun things like drinking at a bar or traveling, supplemented by the occasional mainstream topic of the day making the rounds - like someone famous dying, a local sports victory, or a political thought filtered across all the legacy media outlets. Some people have claimed there is a "silent majority," who is not vocal on issues, but it does not necessarily matter as the "loud" people are in charge. For me to make a comment in antithesis of the the mainstream media will not only make me "un-liked" by many, but likely "un-cool" for deviating from what the perceived majority considers an acceptable post. Thus we never make any progress and do not engage in genuine and meaningful dialogue because many are either afraid to voice their opinions, or do not want to deal with the headache. It's quite sad really. The crux of the matter, however, is vaccine mandates and "passports" are wrong.
Many have cited the Polio vaccine to which we must acknowledge the historical data. Polio was a much different disease than COVID, arguable a lot worse in different contexts. The chances of a child having complications to COVID are relatively slim compared to a child having Polio. When Jonas Salk invented the vaccine a couple things happened - he chose not to patent his work, which ultimately cost him immense personal profit. He considered patenting the vaccine, but the reasoning can likely be attributed to the fact that he had concerns around other manufacturers not making the medicine with the same level of oversight as each other and thus some of it ending up being faulty. When asked by Edward Murrow in 1955 on CBS “Who owns the patent on this vaccine?” he replied, “Well, the people, I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"
Contrast Salk with the current CEO of Pfizer saying we need more vaccines and booster shots - who also stands to make billions of more dollars. In addition, Pfizer also had to pay the "largest criminal fine in US history" at a whopping $2.3 billion price tag. Does that make you feel confident they have your best interests at heart? https://marketrealist.com/p/who-paid-largest-criminal-fine-in-history/
In addition, take the following paragraph:
Before a polio vaccine was developed, polio epidemics were common in the United States. For example, in the immediate pre-vaccine era (i.e., early 1950s), between 13,000 and 20,000 paralytic cases were reported each year. After the development of the inactivated (Salk) injectable vaccine in 1955 and the live (Sabin) oral vaccine in 1961, the number of polio cases dropped dramatically. In 1960, there were 2,525 paralytic cases reported, but by 1965 this number had fallen to 61. https://www.immunize.org/catg.d/p4215.pdf
By 1965 only 56% of the population had been vaccinated for Polio. Compare that to now? 77.4% percent of the population has received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. The fact that many people have received a COVID shot is astounding and one would think we should be ready to return to normal, but cases are on the rise. Vaccinated or unvaccinated, you can still catch the disease. The case can be made the shot has a limited effectiveness and immunity wanes quickly. The Polio vaccine was likewise effective in stifling the illness completely. You cannot compare apples to oranges.
Why are so many nurses willing to lose their jobs over this mandate? We asked them to step up during a crisis, and they went beyond the call of duty to ensure patients were taken care of. Many of them got COVID themselves, yet the powers at be in this country have refused to talk about natural immunity, which global studies out of countries such as Israel point to it as being immensely better than the vaccine itself. How come Anthony Fauci, and other prominent medical experts are refusing to acknowledge natural antibodies? I asked a friend this question, and he told me "nurses are stupid." Not a single person, has been able to give me a substantive answer to this question, and for this reason, among many others - people are hesitant about the COVID shot.
Many people have cited the side effects and the potential heart problems - chief among them myocarditis, which is essentially inflammation of the heart. Maybe those cases are few and far between, but data suggests it's not something to just laugh off. If you are young, in good physical shape, and have no underlying conditions the risk of COVID is virtually none to you. I understand the argument, "well you can infect others" to which people who are high risk should be able to get the vaccine and however many boosters they need to combat the illness. We have additionally passed trillions of dollars worth of legislation to combat COVID, but where has the money gone? Therapeutics like monoclonal antibodies have proven to be very successful against COVID, why are we not talking about them more? Why is the push to get everyone vaccinated? Why is the FDA requesting COVID vaccine data be held for the next 55 years until 2076? Is there something we are not seeing? https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/wait-what-fda-wants-55-years-process-foia-request-over-vaccine-data-2021-11-18/
Why is the souther border completely open? We have had historic apprehensions at the border, with people coming across from many countries all across the world, not just South America. They are not required to prove their vaccination status, but you're going to need one to sit in a pub or get on a plane. We have a homeless crisis of epic proportions in places like California, is that not a breeding ground for COVID to spread? How come many of the same people championing more draconian lockdowns, are the same people caught not abiding by their own rules? Are they not afraid of COVID?
In places like New York and Boston COVID positive patients were allowed back into nursing homes. President Trump sent now disgraced Governor Cuomo the USNS Comfort to treat COVID patients, and it was hardly utilized. Why is that? I wrote the following on December 7th, 2020
I am not downplaying the virus, but we should be able to have common sense policies and none of these illogical guidelines continuously being produced. Take Massachusetts for example - 6,889 of 10,763 deaths (just under 2/3rds as of the writing of this piece) have been in nursing homes - or as Howie Carr describes them: Charlie Bakers death houses. Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York is responsible for the same incompetence, and I want to know - will these people ever be held accountable for virtue signaling rather than rolling up their sleeves and getting to work?
I could keep going on, but the point remains - people have a right to be vaccine hesitant, and nobody has the power to infringe on what you inject into your body. So the question remains, how would I have dealt with COVID or what would I have done differently. First off, you cannot just shut down an economy. We have had a historic number of people die from opioid overdoes throughout COVID. Some people missed important doctors appointments like cancer screenings. Loneliness is a real issue, and in places like New York City where most of the population lives in a closet, they were told to "just stay home for fifteen days," and here we are two years later. How many have turned to bad habits like alcoholism? Children have had to suffer online learning, of which kids from poor communities do not have the same access to resources like laptops as students in wealthier communities - which further exacerbates the wealth gap. I read a story of a student who killed himself on Zoom. Many are sufferingly silently from an avoidable depression.
And you know, look how wealthy some people got during COVID:

Does that bother you? You only got about a couple hundred bucks. https://www.forbes.com/sites/chasewithorn/2021/11/07/led-by-elon-musks-crazy-gains-american-billionaires-have-added-trillions-to-their-fortunes-during-the-pandemic/?sh=5b89f9841372
People have lost their jobs and their livelihoods. Many in minority communities especially are vaccine hesitant. A mandate will only serve to bring back segregation as well as cause individuals to flock to neighboring areas - thus hollowing out and further destroying local businesses and lives. From the onset I would have been a big advocate of therapeutics, I would have isolated the at risk populations and encouraged social distancing. I would have relegated Mike Pence and Anthony Fauci along with 90% of the COVID response team to coffee runs about a month in as they proved to be unprepared to properly engage the American people.
Additionally many doctors and medical professionals have been silenced or banned on social media as Anthony Fauci proclaims "I am the science, an attack on me is an attack on science." It has been said nobody is above the law, likewise no scientist is above peer review. Silencing vast swaths of medical professionals for voicing an opinion contrary to the mainstream narrative does not give people confidence, it does the contrary. If the "science" and "truth" is on their side, they should be able to withstand the highest degree of criticism defending their policies and vaccines. I would have gone to immense lengths to see that the social media giants did not silence and interfere in the arena of ideas. Why will Anthony Fauci not go on conservative media outlets or on shows like the Joe Rogan Experience - which has a massive audience - to plead his case? He should be able to answer the tough questions.
With a vaccine with only short-term effectiveness and variants on the rise, it was inevitable we would end up here. I was in Florida over the summer when cases were rapidly increasing, and the media was painting a dark picture of the sunshine state. I can recall talking with some people and one individual made a pretty simple assertion. In the summer Florida is particularly humid and hot, most people spend it indoors - where the virus has most of its success. Likewise, he made the point that once it was winter in the northern states, people would be like Florida and spend most of their time indoors and Floridians would begin to spend more time outside as the weather cooled and the inverse would happen. I think we're seeing that hypothesis proven in real-time as Florida has low case numbers and northern states are seeing spikes. On the upside however, it would appear that while contagious, new variants like Omicron are fairly mild.
There is absolutely no reason to continue to spread COVID fear porn. People should be encouraged to go to the gym, not shut it down. We must overcome the fear mongering by the mainstream media, and acknowledge the continued methods are not the way. It is a basic psychology principle - people do not do well when they are told what to do. Vaccination rates were steady and increasing - there was no reason for Joe Biden to announce a mandate, it only caused more hesitation. He should have rather continued campaigning as to why people should get the vaccine. However, I will include a must watch video below of prominent individuals who can only blame themselves for a lot of the hesitancy https://twitter.com/RubinReport/status/1471675192367665152?s=20.
People are acting like you should never get sick anymore. What if I go to a party and somebody gives me a smooch and gives me the flu or mono? How is that any different? I have taken COVID seriously from the onset, and I am additionally not anti-vaccine, but how come we didn't go this nuts over the flu shot? My position remains unwavering - you must do what is in your best interest in consultation with your doctor. We should continue proactively testing, engage the discussion of natural immunity better, devote more resources to natural immunity, and focus on protecting the elderly, by not following Cuomo's lead and killing them via criminal negligence.
Another point, and I have written on this, but Anthony Fauci spread immense lies during the AIDS outbreak, telling people they could get AIDS by just being in close contact with someone. Such rhetoric only served to make gay individuals second class citizens, and he is thus carrying that mantle again except this time he is after the "un-vaccinated." This "man" had no right to continue practicing medicine after engaging in such malpractice. If we are to get back on track, we need new people leading who will no longer dance in abstracts and stoke the seeds of division, but be precise, transparent, and honest about the situation. https://twitter.com/Lynxabi/status/1470394855671189506?s=20
Families with young children or individuals with ailments that make them immunocompromised are also barred from participating in the city of Boston. Such policy is sickening and unacceptable. I refuse to sit back silently as the city which birthed the American Revolution descends into darkness.
